Patrick Ivy Partner at INK Law

Meet Patrick Ivy: The Contract and Energy Law Expert Who Reads the Fine Print So You Don’t Have To

By INK Law | Ivy · Newburn · Knight

Every deal has a pressure point. A clause that sounds fine until it isn’t. A financing structure that works until the market shifts. A regulatory environment that’s manageable until someone in government decides it isn’t.

Patrick Ivy has spent his career finding those pressure points before they find his clients.

Patrick is INK’s founding partner for contracts, energy law, and regulatory counsel — and if you’ve ever tried to navigate upstream oil and gas, syndicated lending, or a complex government contract, you already understand why you want someone who’s been in this territory a thousand times before the first meeting.

The Texas Foundation

Patrick holds a J.D. with Honors from the University of Texas at Austin — where he served as Chief Articles Editor for the Texas Journal of Oil, Gas, and Energy Law. That’s not an incidental detail. It means Patrick was immersed in the legal architecture of the energy industry before he ever took his first client call. He also holds a B.B.A. in Finance from UT’s McCombs School of Business, which means when he’s reading a credit agreement or a mineral rights transfer, he’s reading it the way a businessperson reads it — not just a lawyer.

He’s licensed in Texas, Colorado, North Dakota, and Wyoming. That four-state footprint isn’t accidental. It maps almost exactly onto the terrain where his energy clients operate.

What He Does

Patrick’s practice runs across three interconnected lanes.

Contracts. Patrick understands that a contract is only as good as its precision. His approach starts with understanding a business’s operations at a real level — not a surface level — and then drafting language that actually says what it means. He’s negotiated master agreements, confidentiality agreements, insurance and indemnity provisions, licensing deals, independent contractor agreements, and more across industries. The goal is always the same: a contract that aligns with what the client is actually trying to accomplish, not just what the boilerplate covers.

Energy Law. This is the lane Patrick built his career in. Upstream and midstream oil and gas, from small producers to large publicly traded companies. He’s authored land title opinions, conducted due diligence on multi-million dollar asset portfolios, drafted sophisticated lease agreements, negotiated service agreements, resolved operational disputes, and handled transfers of mineral rights, easements, and leasehold interests. If it happens between the ground and the pipeline, Patrick has worked it.

Finance and Lending. Patrick represents both lenders and borrowers in debt financings — syndicated loans exceeding $100MM and direct loans in the $5–25MM range. He negotiates credit agreements and loan documents, secures interests in real and personal property, drafts corporate resolutions, and manages legal closings. He simplifies the complexity without losing the precision, which is exactly what clients need when a deal is moving fast.

The Regulatory Reality

One of the things that distinguishes Patrick from a generalist business attorney is his comfort operating inside regulatory environments — including directly with government authority of all types. Energy law is not a space where you can afford to be surprised by a regulatory development. Patrick knows where the landmines are.

That same instinct applies to his work in non-profit and tax-exempt organizations, real property, and secured transactions — areas where the rules are specific and the consequences of getting them wrong are real.

The Specialist Mindset

Patrick is the kind of attorney who’s been deep in a single industry long enough to know not just the law, but how the industry actually works. Where deals go sideways. Where language gets exploited. Where clients assume they’re protected when they aren’t. That depth is what INK was built around — not attorneys who cover everything adequately, but attorneys who are genuinely authoritative in their lanes.

Patrick’s lane is long, and he knows every mile of it. Speaking of lanes — when he’s not deep in a contract or navigating a pipeline dispute, you’ll likely find him behind the wheel of something that has no business being driven at normal speeds. Patrick rents and drives specialty cars in his spare time. Fast, precise, and completely in control. Professionally and otherwise.
